After the Wild Adventure of getting really cheap flights to Athens it was time for the 3 of us to find somewhere to stay. The "Old City" of Athens is a popular destination for backpackers and travellers alike. The "Old City" is filled with all kinds of tourists. Actually the "Old City" is filled with lots of history as well. It's one of the more preserved areas of Athens and really is nice just to stroll around taking in the many sights like ruins, restaurants or to do some shopping. Flower pots and hanging baskets drape the streets as you walk by giving the whole area a look of Greek splendour. Venture a few blocks from the "Old City" and you would quickly like to hop back to it or do a runner to a gorgeous island somewhere :)) Unfortunately the rest of the city is just like any other city in the world.
The hotel we found was right in the heart of the square, called "The Plaka". The hotel's name I forget :)) Of course we found a cheap one!! :)) But the bonus was it was in the best location. We just had to look over our balcony and see all the sights of The Plaka right there in front of our eyes. Directly below our balcony was a great looking restaurant filled with night revellers drinking and eating and having an excellent time. The tables spilled out onto the cobbled stoned paving. The restaurant was quite busy!! :)) Did I mention it was just below our balcony? :)) It was the wickedest place to stay in Athens!
Or was it!!? Maybe we should have stayed somewhere where we couldn't cause any trouble!! :)) But we weren't to know! We were just having fun ... isn't that right Darren & Fi ?? ;)
We set up our mosquito nets in our room, freshened up, had a pee, got some money ready and then went out. After a walk around getting to know the area we headed for a local restaurant ourselves. Scoffing on some local cuisine and having a few beers made the night start just right.
We headed back to our hotel, but first we stopped at the local alcohol shop to buy some supplies. Some beer, a bottle of wine and some strong stuff ... a bottle of gin, or was it vodka!? The night was spinning already :))
Back in our room the cocktails were being made. Fiona, Darren and I were loving the location we scored and celebrated with a few drinks.
Some drinks later, Darren and I were getting into the comedy mode. In England there used to be a comedy show done by 2 guys on T.V. ... I forget the shows name ... but man were they funny!! :)) One skit they did involved acting as travel agents and visiting a foreign location, checking it out and usually getting drunk while evaluating the country.
Darren and I thought this might just be the location for doing such a skit since we were in Athens in Greece and high on life at the time! :) ... and getting extremely drunk!!
We took the skit of SPAIN!! into our own hands ...
The skit starts off lightly, as follows:
( walking along the beach as the sun is setting with people playing in the background ) "It's a great destination for the family. It's also a great destination to come with a bunch of friends. One could even just bring the girlfriend along. Spain is a wonderful place to come."
The next scene is standing outside a restaurant:
"There are many restaurants to choose from when you visit Spain. Lets take a look inside one of them shall we!"
Next scene is tasting the local wine:
"Mmmm ... now the wine here is splendid."
"Err ... let me try some more please waiter?"
The next scene shoots to another restaurant tasting wine again, but the time is quite a bit later:
"SPAIN!!" ( slightly slurred )
" ... is a beautiful country! The people here are terrific!" ( again slightly slurred )
The next scene is in a bar and he is quite drunk now:
"SPAIN!! ... what a luuuuvly country!!"
"Look at all those people having such a fucking good time!!"
And so the skit continues in this fashion until the reporter gets so legless that he gets into a fight and gets his lights punched out!! :))
Now back on the balcony in Athens we are getting into this skit big time :)) The atmosphere is rolling.
I'm on the balcony with my wine, gin and juice cocktail in my hand just finishing off one of the final scenes. This scene is done with a mouthful of alcohol and the word SPAIN is spat. As I did this I leaned over the balcony and spat SPAIN!! ... the whole mouthful went all over the people on the tables at the restaurant below us!!
Shit!!
Whoops!!
The cries of anguish from the restaurant patrons could be heard from our room and it wasn't long before the owner of the hotel was banging on our door!! :))
We were wasted ... what was going to happen to us!?
Fiona opens the door and begins the cleaning up process of apologising about the idiots in the room. I think Darren joined in the apologising too. I was in no state to talk to anyone, especially the angry owner of the hotel!! It's better to leave that part to the lovely blond diplomat :)) Not long after the owner left, but he was in a foul mood that was for sure!!
Lucky for us we were heading to the islands the next day so we couldn't get abused on the street from anyone!! :))
What a laugh we had ... the islands were beckoning us. They are just a ferry ride away :))
